Groups are subsets of references in a library; some are automatically generated and permanent, and others are created by the user and temporary. These options let users organize a library according to their needs.
Groups are arranged in the Groups panel alphabetically; the user can re-arrange the order of groups by dragging
References can be added to groups by dragging and dropping
Deleting references from a group does not remove them from the library - they are moved to the "Unfiled" and "All References" groups
Group Sets and Smart Groups do not sync to the Endnote Online account
A Group Set is a superset of references. Group Sets are the top-most group in EndNote's hierarchical arrangement of groups.

A Group, also referred to as a Custom Group, is a subset of references. Groups nest under Group Sets in EndNote's hierarchical arrangement of groups.
Highlight the Group Set where the Group will nest > Right-click > Create Group
The Group will appear under the Group Set > Name Group

A Smart Group is a subset of references collated by search criteria defined by the user. Smart Groups can be positioned as a Group Set or Custom Group in EndNote's hierarchical arrangement of groups.
Display all references by highlighting the All References group
Groups menu > Create Smart Group
Name the Smart Group and define its search criteria > Create button
The Smart Group will appear under the first Group Set in the Groups panel
Users can create up to 5,000 Smart Groups (combined with Groups)
When new references are added to the library, they are automatically organized into a Smart Group, if they match its search criteria
When you delete a reference from a Smart Group, it is deleted from the All References group
EndNote users can edit the Reference Type (i.e., book, journal article, etc.) and bibliographic data of a particular reference.
Highlight the reference in the library
Reference Panel > Edit
Use the drop-down menu to change the reference type and edit, input, or delete information from fields

If the author field is populated with an entity, place a comma at the end of the entity name. This tells EndNote that the name is not personal and helps it format the entity name correctly in the bibliography of a paper.
EndNote Support: Updating existing library references
EndNote users can retrieve any available field updates for journal articles using the Find Reference Updates feature. Update information is sourced from Web of Science, PubMed, and other external databases.
Highlight the reference(s)
References menu > Find Reference Updates
A Review window opens and displays available updates in the left column
Choose to update all fields, empty fields, or edit the reference manually
A confirmation message will pop-up > OK button
EndNote users can attach files stored on their computers to references in their library. They can also use EndNote to search external sources and attach available full-text PDF files of articles to references in their library.

EndNote will attempt to locate and attach the full-text file to the reference

EndNote output styles format citations in a paper and references in a bibliography. Output styles are defined by journals and publishers.
EndNote displays the output style in the Summary sub-panel of the Reference panel. Users can change styles using the drop-down menu in the Summary sub-panel or Tools menu.

EndNote offers more than 6,000 output styles. Use the Online Style Finder when you cannot find a style in the desktop application; users can search by style name or publisher.
Output styles can be modified to meet user needs or publisher requirements. Simple changes can be made following the instructions outlined here. Please refer to the manual linked below for detailed information and instructions for modifying output styles.
Make sure the style you want to edit appears in the style drop-down menu. If it does not, choose "Select Another Style..." to mark it and add it to the drop-down menu.
