Output Styles

Notes on Output Styles

EndNote output styles format citations in a paper and references in a bibliography. Output styles are defined by journals and publishers. 

  • EndNote is pre-loaded with hundreds of output styles
  • More styles are available for download online
  • Users can mark styles as "favorites"
  • Users can edit styles 

Choose an Output Style

Choose a Style

EndNote will identify styles selected by the user as "favorites" and add them to the style menu.

How-to

  1. Style menu > Select Another Style…
  2. Quick Search: begin typing style name or Find by: select from a list of style categorized by discipline
  3. Select output style > Choose button

Get Output Styles Online

EndNote offers more than 6,000 output styles. Use the Online Style Finder when you cannot find a style in the desktop application; users can search by style name or publisher. 

How-to

  1. Go to the Online Style Finder
  2. Perform a search 
  3. Download and open style file In EndNote
  4. File > Save As > Delete the word “Copy”
  5. File > Close Style

Edit an Output Style

Output styles can be edited to meet user needs or publisher requirements. Simple changes can be made following the instructions outlined here. Please refer to the manual linked below for detailed information and instruction on editing output styles.

  1. Edit > Output Styles > select style
  2. *Edit the style
  3. File > Close Style

*Select the Citations section to edit in-text citations and select the Bibliography section to edit the references list at the end of a paper. Select the About this Style section to edit general layout.
