Administrative HistoryDr. Gilbert H. Fletcher was the chairman of the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Division of Radiotherapy from 1948-1981, as well as a professor of radiotherapy at the University of Texas Medical School and Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. Dr. Fletcher made pioneering contributions to the field of radiation oncology, including participating in the design of the first cobalt-60 radiotherapy unit, and determining for the first time the doses of radiation necessary to treat tumors. Prior to his death in 1992, Dr. Fletcher received two of the American Cancer Society’s highest honors: the Distinguished Service Award (1979) and the Medal of Honor (1990). The Gilbert H. Fletcher Society was established in 1976 by a group of Dr. Fletcher’s former students as an expression of their gratitude for his contributions to radiotherapy, as well as to offer continuing medical education in radiation oncology. Membership totals have exceeded 300 oncologists in various years since the Society’s founding. The Fletcher Society members meet annually in different international locations, including past meeting sites in Croatia, Spain, and Indonesia. The annual meetings host presentations of the latest radiation oncology research, provide an opportunity to grant the annual Resident Essay Awards to researchers who are prospective members of the Society, to vote in new members, and to amend the Society’s bylaws. Return to the Table of Contents Scope and Content NoteThe Gilbert H. Fletcher Society Records provide an overview of the history of the Society from 1977-2011, including its purpose of offering continuing medical education and presenting emerging radiation oncology research, its management throughout the tenures of various administrators, and the locations of many of its annual meetings. The collection comprises three boxes of documents: one of primarily financial documents and two of mostly annual meeting planning documents. There are a few financial documents interspersed among the meeting planning documents, which are not ordered chronologically. The individual authors of the documents are mainly people who have held positions of leadership in the Fletcher Society at different times, such as president or committee chairman. These include Dr. Kie Kian Ang, Dr. Lillian M. Fuller, Dr. Tyvin A. Rich, Dr. Eleanor Montague, Dr. Marsha D. McNeese, Dr. Luis Delclos, and many others. The financial documents consist of expense reports, deposit and bank account statements, records of paid and unpaid membership dues, the Treasurer’s report, and the society’s checking account information from various years. The documents related to planning the annual meetings consist of correspondence among society administrators and members, continuing medical education accreditation forms and submissions, meeting agendas and minutes, Resident Essay Award abstract submissions and winners, catering requests and menus for annual meetings, and membership application and update information from various years. There are also several floppy discs and digital video cassettes with unknown contents included in the Fletcher Society Records.
